Impedance Testing

FROM FOCUS POWER

A battery impedance test is a non-intrusive, 6-to-12-month maintenance check that measures the internal resistance of a battery to determine its health, deterioration level, and remaining life. It uses an AC current injected into the battery, typically for UPS systems, to identify weak cells before they cause total failure.

Key Details About Battery Impedance Testing: Purpose: To monitor the internal impedance of a battery, which increases as it ages or degrades.

How it Works: A small AC current is passed through the battery and the resulting voltage drop is measured to determine the cell’s internal resistance.

Benefits: It provides a proactive, detailed health check of individual cells, allowing for scheduled, cost-effective, and safe replacement.

Application: It is commonly used on UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, as it can detect individual cell failure before the entire string fails.

Result: The test results are compared against a baseline or manufacturer specifications to identify weakening batteries. Regular, long-term testing is crucial for ensuring the reliability of critical power syste and enables you to build up a history so you can identify signs of early failure preventing more expensive damage.
